Accessibility

Vooruit is a protected, hundred-year-old listed building with many floors, staircases and hidden corners. We try as much as possible to make our events and all the different spaces accessible for people with disabilities. If you have a disability, it's always good to let us know when you reserve your ticket. During events we will be happy to have a member of staff guide you to your place.

FIRST ENTRANCE

Entrance 1 - entrance hall, Reception & Ticket Desk

The Reception and Ticket Desk, which form one space, are the first things you see when you enter De Vooruit through the renewed entrance hall. It is located at Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat 23. The entrance is to the left of the entrance to the VIERNULVIER Café. At the Reception Desk you can get more information about VIERNULVIER or performances, or if you want to speak to a VIERNULVIER staff member. At the Ticket Desk you can also do all this, but you can also buy tickets or gift vouchers. You can find the contact information and opening hours of the Ticket Desk and Reception here.

Tip: Read this visual story to prepare your visit to De Vooruit.

Entrance 2 - VIERNULVIER Café & Terrace

You can eat or drink something at the VIERNULVIER Café and Terrace, accessible via Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat 23. The entrance is located to the right of the entrance hall. The Terrace can also be reached via the stairs next to the covered bicycle shed, on the far right at the front. All info on Café and Terrace can be found here.

Entrance 3 - The Vooruit Concert Hall

For a party or a concert, the Concertzaal is the place to be. You can't get there through Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat, but through the back of De Vooruit near the Scheldt. You can find short directions here.

Tip: Read this visual story in preparation of your visit to the Concertzaal.

Guided tours

If you really want to get to know the building inside and out, you can always take a guided tour. Check the Calendar for all Sunday tours or a customized tour.

Gender-inclusive toilets

We want to make as many places as possible in De Vooruit accessible to as many people as possible. That includes the toilets of the Balzaal, Theaterzaal, Domzaal and the VIERNULVIER Café: they are gender-inclusive. There is no longer a strict division into male and female. However, hands still have to be washed after use.

Language & surtitles

At each event on vooruit.be, we mention which language is spoken. All information about language and any surtitles can be found at the bottom of the 'practical' section of each production.

PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Booking with a disability

When making your reservation, please indicate if you have a disability, or if you use a regular or electric wheelchair. Also indicate if you want to sit in your wheelchair during the performance. This way we can provide the ideal customized accompaniment. Before the start and after a performance, a VIERNULVIER staff member will escort you to your seat. The contact details and opening hours of the Ticket Desk / Reception can be found here.

Relaxed performance

A number of performances explicitly state 'relaxed performance'. With a relaxed performance we extend a warm welcome to everyone at VIERNULVIER, especially those who find it difficult to fit in with standard theater conventions: people with learning or movement disorders, autism, neurological conditions, people with Tourette's,...

During a relaxed performance, we do not completely extinguish the hall light. Spectators are allowed to make sounds and movements during the performance. Those who want can react to the performance in a spontaneous way. Going to the toilet during the performance? You can leave the hall without any problem. And if you don't make it to the theater in time, you can always enter the theater - latecomers are welcome.

European Disability Card

People with disabilities - and their companions - can take advantage of the discounted rate with the European Disability Card. This card is an instrument to facilitate access of persons with disabilities to culture, sports and leisure activities. Request your free card here.

Persons with visual impairments

Audio description & introductory feel tour

VIERNULVIER provides audio description and/or an introductory feel tour whenever and wherever possible. Audio description is a technique whereby a performance becomes accessible to persons with visual impairments. Headphones provide additional information about what is happening on stage, and what does not come across clearly from dialogues. Before the performance we provide a short introduction and the actors introduce themselves. That way you immediately know which voice belongs to which character.

If it makes sense for the experience of a performance and is feasible for the company, VIERNULVIER organizes a feeling tour on stage itself. You can touch the set and props at that time. That way you know what the audio description refers to during the performance.

Persons with motor disabilities

Accessibility entrance hall & ticket desk

You will find a push button at the entrance to the entrance hall, which takes you directly into the entrance hall. In the entrance hall there is also an elevator to reach the Ballroom and Cathedral Hall. The ticket counter has a lowered section, making it easier for people in wheelchairs to order tickets or ask for information.

Accessibility rooms

Each hall is accessible to persons with wheelchairs, accompanied by a VIERNULVIER staff member. Through our elevators, we can get everyone where they need to be. If we are aware of your disability, we can also hold an appropriate seat - usually in the front row - for you. There is also a toilet near each venue that is adapted for people in wheelchairs.

Accessibility VIERNULVIER Café & Terrace

As a person in a wheelchair, it is easier to get to the VIERNULVIER Café via the entrance shaft - see above - and along the central staircase hall. The Café's toilets are accessible via the elevator in the entrance hall. The Terrace is accessible via the Café. There is a seamless passage without stairs there, where on the left is an elevator that takes you to the Terrace level (+1).

Accessibility tour

The tours are (mostly) accessible to persons in wheelchairs. Through elevators and ramps almost all rooms are accessible.
