It is no coincidence that Bolis Pupul's music sounds the way it does. Born of a Chinese mother and a Belgian father, it breathes both Western and Asian. You hear snatches of Detroit techno, Chicago House and New Beat but equally Yellow Magic Orchestra or Dada music.

Together with Charlotte Adigéry, he traveled the world following the success of the 2022 Topical Dancer album. And now there is his first solo record on Soulwax Brothers' DEEWEE label. Letter to Yu is literally a letter addressed to his late mother Yu Wei Wun, whose birthplace he went to visit in Hong Kong. Songs like "Ma Tau Wai Road" (exactly the place where he wrote this), "Completely Half" (based on field recordings) and "Spicy Crab" literally evoke this search.

Musically, he translated this into a mix of experimental electronica, dance floor bangers, disco and elegant grooves. Never far away from colleagues Bicep, Four Tet or Kelly Lee Owens, yet in a very personal style, such as we did not yet hear in earlier periods with Hong Kong Dong or the Germans. The New Boris est arrivé.

Letter to Yu is letterlijk een brief gericht aan zijn overleden moeder Yu Wei Wun, wiens geboorteplaats hij in Hong Kong ging opzoeken. Nummers als 'Ma Tau Wai Road' (exact de plaats waar hij dit schreef), 'Completely Half' (op basis van field recordings) en 'Spicy Crab' evokeren letterlijk deze zoektocht.

Muzikaal vertaalde hij dit in een mix van experimentele electronica, dansvloer bangers, disco en elegante grooves. Nooit ver weg van collega`s Bicep, Four Tet of Kelly Lee Owens, maar toch in een heel persoonlijke stijl, zoals we die nog niet hoorden in eerdere periodes bij Hong Kong Dong of the Germans.
