Exuberant children's party in the foyer of Ha Concerts

On December 6, we celebrate a warm and playful Sinterklaas party with Queen Nikkolah: the black, female counterpart of the classic saint, conceived by artist and performer Laura Nsengiyumva.

For the sixth consecutive year, she lands in Ghent for a joyful afternoon filled with dancing, storytelling, music, gifts, coloring pages, balloons, games,... This year we welcome Queen Mimi for a celebration full of color, energy, and imagination.

Some extra explanation

Queen Nikkolah shows how traditions can evolve with society. She offers a positive, inclusive image that helps break the colonial past surrounding Zwarte Piet and celebrates diversity with dance, music, stories, and fun.

The project originated in 2017 within Brussels grassroots organizations and has grown into a new, shared folklore where children, parents, and artists create new stories together.

"It is certainly not my intention to rewrite the history of Sinterklaas, as some think. But with Queen Nikkolah, I would very much like to add a new chapter to the story." - Laura Nsengiyumva in the Nieuwsblad
