Yalla Dabke

From Ghent to Gaza, with love
Yalla Dabke vzw & VIERNULVIER
  • Sat 23.05
    20:00 - 00:00
    BALZAAL

Mohammed Albarrawi is a young Palestinian singer who performs folk songs, accompanied on the piano. In Gaza, his dream was to use art to convey a message and become a famous singer, but this was made difficult by the restrictions on Palestinians travelling within their own country.

Yalla Dabke is a collective of young Palestinians in Belgium who perform Dabke, a traditional Levantine folk dance that has become a symbol of identity, resilience and resistance. From their second home in Ghent, the dancers share their cultural heritage with people from all over, connecting different generations of Palestinians and giving expression to feelings of homesickness, hope and injustice. At the same time, Yalla Dabke aims to build bridges between people from diverse backgrounds through dance, thereby bringing communities closer together; that is why they invite the audience to join in the dancing afterwards.

Yalla Soundsystem is a collective of DJs and producers Bader, Acid Ponch and their friends, delivering an eclectic mix of all kinds of rhythmic genres such as bass, jungle, dubstep, grime, footwork and acid, combined with Shaabi, Raï, Gnawa and Mahraganat. They will bring the evening to a close.
