In 1933, during the Great Depression, Samuel Murphy (Ethan Hawke) is separated from his young daughter Penny and sent to a ruthless labor camp. A guard (Russell Crowe) offers him freedom in exchange for smuggling a treasure of gold through a desolate wilderness. Time is running out: Penny is at risk of being given up. An exhausting journey begins.

The 70s are completely back in The Weight, a raw, gripping survival thriller that grabs you by the throat from the very first minutes. For his debut film, director Padraic McKinkley has drawn inspiration from 70s classics like Deliverance and Sorcerer. In 1933, during the Great Depression, Samuel Murphy (Ethan Hawke) is separated from his young daughter Penny and sent to a ruthless labor camp. A guard (Russell Crowe) promises to help Murphy escape in exchange for smuggling a treasure of gold through a desolate wilderness. Time is running out, as Penny is soon to be given up for adoption. With a few accomplices of his choosing, Murphy embarks on a nerve-wracking journey that can be summarized in four key words: distrust, betrayal, violence, and exhaustion. A truly brilliant Hawke captivates for two hours. His weathered face and tanned skin fit perfectly with this thrilling adventure film.
