Honeyboys

Honeyboys is an experimental VR film by Nemo Vos. We follow a red-haired, naked delivery boy on his journey through indescribable worlds as he descends into the guts of consumer society. Eroticism, death, religion and birth become mechanical rituals in this vast, eternal and insatiable machine.

Honeyboys grew out of an image that stuck with us; A Chinese city during Covid, where during the lockdown, almost the entire economy had shut down except for delivery drivers and livestreamers. The boys were delivering food and goods to the livestreaming girls, who were advertising those same products back to the boys and to each other. Labor and consumption stripped down to nothing.

The gig economy gave us the way in. It’s a system most people brush past without really seeing. A rider on a bike, a box on a doorstep, labor that stays hidden behind the app. This invisible system became the core of the piece. We think growing inequality, here and everywhere, is behind a lot of what’s going wrong. Honeyboys doesn’t offer a solution. We don’t think there is one. It’s a way of looking straight at reality and finding some meaning in it anyway.

The viewer moves through the piece without control, pulled forward at a steady pace with no stopping and no turning back. Spatial sound design by Spinvis wraps the world around you, so it’s something you inhabit rather than watch.

We didn’t just want to make a film about overconsumption and exploitation. We wanted to make something that lets you feel, for thirty-six minutes, what it is like to be caught inside those systems, and trust the audience to take it from there.
