Hessian has been active since 2010. After a few releases in 2011 and 2012 on the Ghent-based Smoke & Dust Records, the band perfected their raging punk metal with raw black metal influences in 2013 with their full-length debut Manegarmr (Southern Lord). This was followed by a split release with Primitive Man in 2014 (Hypertension Records). In the ten years that followed, the band members were far from idle. They helped shape the sound of underground bands like Wiegedood, VAAG., Living Gate, Crouch, Haemers, and T.B.H.R.
Things Fall Apart was recorded back in 2016, but has been sitting on the shelf all this time. Musically, the EP continues the trajectory of their later work: darker and more repetitive, but with the same relentless urgency.
And although the four tracks on the EP were recorded a decade ago, that urgency has only grown. In a world that is increasingly sliding into an apocalyptic atmosphere, songs like ‘Violence Eternal’ or ‘Sinking Deeper Still’ sound like a timeless, yet little hopeful warning. Things Fall Apart, a reference to W.B. Yeats’ apocalyptic poem The Second Coming, feels like the only fitting title for this postponed end. This is the last chance to see Hessian live in action.
The first single of the EP, Sinking Deeper Still, is already out. Listen via Bandcamp.
