This GKO Café draws on ongoing research by eCO-CITY (HOGENT) and Averroes vzw into the barriers faced by young people from migrant backgrounds and youth organisations in their engagement with the cultural sector.
We will start the evening with three young people (and their organisations) sharing their personal experiences with culture. We will then engage in a discussion with a panel about the key insights from the research. Which barriers keep cropping up? Which unwritten rules make it difficult to gain entry or find your way within the sector? What makes collaboration between cultural partners and youth organisations challenging?
Together, we will discuss these obstacles and explore what is needed for the cultural sector to break out and for youth organisations to break into the cultural sector. We will examine whether and how these actors can move closer together.'
During the panel, there will be time for questions and comments from the audience. Afterwards, we will set aside time for further discussion and networking. The panellists are: Mustafa Boumy (Averroes vzw), Lieze De Middeleir (HOGENT), Neslihan Dogan (heritage researcher at Ghent University), Lien Van de Velde (director of Cultuur Gent), Haider Al timimi (Jong Gewei) – moderator Amani El Haddad (GKO)
In terms of content, Cultuurcode builds on the ‘Whose culture? Your culture!’ initiative and aims to reopen and share the conversation about cultural participation, accessibility and unwritten rules within the sector. You can find that research via this link.
