Dries Meddens (1970, Netherlands) is a producer and director of poetic films that balance between fiction and fact. He gave up his career as a woodworker-designer to start making films. After various film projects and a move from Brussels to the French countryside in 2006, he made his first short film, ‘Ciel’ (2014), which was featured in the Cannes Short Film Corner.
Film became his primary focus, and in 2015 he moved to Ghent. That same year, he founded Idiot Productions. In the meantime, he created ‘Wages of the Imagination’, about the revival of the London cult band Terminal Cheesecake (IFFR 2019). Following this, he spent five years working on his first feature documentary, ‘Zaad’, about the hereditary nature of his father’s bipolar disorder. The film premiered in January 2024 at the Dr. Guislain Museum in Ghent.
Currently, Dries is working on a new film project revolving around the theme of ignorance.
‘ ‘Zaad’ is an incredibly rich and loving portrait of a sick father ★★★★★.’
