The icy starting point of the VIERNULVIER spring campaign features a series of ice sculptures with the striking title ‘Frozen Vanitas’, created and photographed by the Belgian (photo) artist Athos Burez.
By producing replicas of freezing fruits and everyday objects such as a glass or a juicer, Burez ‘captures’ a moment and holds it still. But he does this in ice, which is not only fragile and delicate but also temporary. Just like baroque still lifes, the frozen ‘Frozen Vanitas’ compositions remind us of the fleeting and ephemeral, and they remind us that everything is temporary.
