Throughout his entire life, Stefan Hertmans has kept journals. In that quietude, he experienced the freedom of thought that accompanied his published work. In ever-changing tones, he examines himself as a writer: what is the value of a diary, how do you confront your own vulnerability within it?
These diaries, written during the period 1990-2000, reveal who the writer Hertmans was before he experienced his great success. He also writes about his loves, friendships, his passion for music, philosophy, nature, and of course, literature.
Reading 'Smeltwater en middagzon' is an intense experience, where the reader not only discovers the sources of Hertmans' oeuvre but is also regularly led to their own existential questions.
Publisher Suzanne Holtzer welcomes everyone, Stefan Hertmans engages in conversation with Ruth Joos, and Dirk Roofthooft reads excerpts from the diary. Afterwards, the author will sign books at the stand of bookstore Paard van Troje.
