Ghent-based singer-songwriter and composer Nele De Gussem (Uma Chine) delivered a sensational album of mystic pop, psychedelic ambiance and pulsating electronica with ‘The Loom’. She has a preoccupation with soundscaping that involves using her sensual voice and electronic/analog instruments as a sort of palette of rich textures. De Gussem has played a vital role in the Belgian alternative scene. In addition to spearheading her project Uma Chine and performing in bands such as BRNS and Future Old People are Wizards, she has composed music for dance and film, exploring contemporary classical, alternative rock, and sound experimentation.
The sought-after Belgian visual artist Victor Verhelst (STROOM) created a unique collage of motion graphics inspired by 1990s computer games for ‘The Loom: A Rave for the Introverted’, which possess an otherworldly allure and a deeply symbiotic relationship with the music. Rarely has the interplay between digital and musical art come together so compellingly. Sounds are transformed into colours; timbres merge with textures and patterns dance to the rhythm of the music.
Both De Gussem and Verhelst share a fascination with the interweaving of analogue media and innovative software and hardware. Verhelst describes his visual language as “Trippy Vegas” – a psychedelic landscape that takes the viewer through a kaleidoscope of colours and patterns, through realms of recognisable and unrecognisable architecture, mythical creatures and structures, all entwined in a rhythm of chaos.
