'Open Heaven' by Jonas Eika is a genre-defying historical novel about shame, longing and everything
that is both difficult and beautiful about creating a shared life – something we
long for so much right now. On 8 May, Eika will discuss their book with Arno Van Vlierberghe.

It is 1233, and in a beguinage in Liège, five women have come together to live in a completely new way: unmarried, not as nuns, but as  human beings. Whilst they struggle against persecution by the Catholic Church, one of the beguines, Ida, begins to have visions of the young Virgin Mary, an ambiguous Jesus and a choir of angels. Gradually, and against her will, Ida emerges as a prophet, who, despite everything, desperately tries to hold on to what she loves most.

‘Een briljant en magnifiek verhaal. Open hemel is een unieke roman in de nieuwe Deense literatuur: hoogst origineel, ambitieus, visionair en overlopend van literaire rijkdom.’ Kristeligt Dagblad ******
