For nearly 30 years, Earth's Dylan Carlson, has inhabited a uniquely elastic role in rock, an exponent of experimental drone-based guitar music and a signature practitioner of the detuned riff. The only constant in this band's aesthetic is change, contrary to their recorded music that relies on heavy yet hypnotic forms of repetition.

Earth are an American rock band founded in Olympia, Washington and led by the guitarist Dylan Carlson. Initially active between 1989 and 1997, their early work is characterized by heavy guitar distortion, drones, and lengthy, minimalist song structures; their 1993 debut album is recognized as a pioneering work of the drone metal genre.

Carlson often jokes he had “one good idea” and ran with it. In reality, Carlson has had loads of great ideas. This is apparent in Earth’s continuing discography. While their style remains anchored in lingering repetition, every Earth record is different to the last.

When Earth returned in the 2000s, with Adrienne Davies on drums, Carlson resisted the temptation to rehash the sound on which Sunn O))) and others had since capitalized. In 2019 Earth pared back down to the core duo of Carlson and Davies, with the guitarist limiting his layers of effects in order to hone a more “sensual” style.

Drone metal pioneers at Club Wintercircus

By 2023, the duo of Nataša Grujović and Steve Moore had begun the process of composing their first original works which would eventually become Event Horizon, a series of pieces premiered at Casino Luxembourg. While there are many shared elements with electro-acoustic music via synthesizers and digital processing, the duos primary force comes from its use of resonance in acoustic spaces and in the instruments, they play — accordion and trombone — to create harmonic fields into which melodic elements are introduced encompassing spiritual jazz, ritualistic drone and western classic traditions.

Steve Moore is a pianist, trombonist, composer and author. Moore has produced two solo albums, STEBMO and Super Drum. In 2012, he published a book on music, harmonic theory and geometry entitled Plato, Pythagoras, Polyrhythm. Since 2006, he has also been a member of the bands EARTH and sunnO))).

Nataša Grujović (SRB LU)
After studying music at the Hochschule für Musik Trossingen in Germany, Nataša mainly performed with various ensembles in Western and Eastern Europe. Since 2009, she has been based in Luxembourg, where she further developed her approach to chamber music, focusing on generating experimental sounds, and where she also began composing. Her compositions are based on the phenomenon of sound itself and its physical manifestation. In 2020, following the sudden death of her chamber music partner, Steve Kaspar, she is working on her solo programme, together with Steve Moore as a duo, with the newly formed ensemble for improvised music “Burning Giraffe” and butoh dancer Yuko Kominami.
