Sea, sun & surrealism

Sun on your face, your back in the sand. Your beautiful best friend rubs sunscreen on your skin. Her hands move up and down. Her smile. You want to tell her how gorgeous she looks today and how much you love her, but you’re afraid it might ruin the friendship.

Are people becoming more prudish about sex? Is the world getting more polarized? Does it differ from country to country? Where I come from, gay sex is forbidden because people say it goes against nature.

No towel, no swimsuit, who cares. When you live on impulse you have to improvise. Always ready to stir things up, to throw punches and take hits. Out with the crew, chasing trouble, chasing thrills.

Sex that isn’t mysterious. Sex in dialogue. Ruleless sex. Crazy sex. Wild sex.

I want to find love without having to make it.

Together with eleven young people, you spend a day and a night on the beach. The sound of the waves becomes the rhythm of their thoughts on sexuality, full of desires, questions, beliefs, doubts and fantasies. Their intimate reflections on love and eroticism surface, as visible as their sun-warmed skin.

Until my unreachable, soul-deep octopus desire disappears into the depths of the dark ocean, searching for its next victim.

The text of 'the beach' was created over five months by ten young people from Antwerp through writing sessions, improvisations, conversations and interviews. On stage, their words are embodied by eleven other young performers.

'the beach' marks the first collaboration between hetpaleis and Sarah Vanhee, a transdisciplinary artist whose work has been presented across Belgium and abroad for over twenty years.

"shoutout to all youngsters: please bring your parents and other family members - it is your responsibility to educate them about sex!"
