This is a standing performance, it is weelchair accessible.

Opera with lots of sand and climate concerns

From the balcony of the Concert Hall, you look at about thirty beachgoers. Swimsuits, flip-flops, sunscreen — the standard gear of the fridge box tourist. With the difference that on this stretch of coast, life is sung in arias. On the tons of sand that cover the floor, humanity is displayed in stories about everything and nothing.

Although, mostly about everything. Because it’s about everyday concerns like getting sunburned and planning the next vacations. But in this performance, it’s not just the sand that grates. From small worries, it shifts to big concerns like climate and the planet. Bit by bit, this soup of stories, as the creators call it, builds up from loose solos to a global symphony.

‘Sun & Sea’ was the Lithuanian Pavilion in 2019 at the Biennale for contemporary art in Venice and won the Golden Lion there. Since then, the performance has toured the world. “A masterpiece for the age of climate change,” wrote The New York Times. And: “bitter, seductive, and sly in ways that reveal themselves days or years later.” Compliments that are not entirely unexpected when you know that the female trio of creators has already stacked up awards with their previous work, ‘Have a Good Day!’.

Like we’re sleepwalking to the end of the world.

Op de voorstelling van 14 juni is er een audiodescriptie voorzien. Maak je daar graag gebruik van? Mail naar publiekswerking@viernulvier.gent
