Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe

'NACHTEN / Ballet de la Nuit'
23.10 - 24.10

Classic opera is given a new symbolic meaning

‘NACHTEN/Ballet de la Nuit’ tells the story of Louis the Fourteenth in 1653, when he proclaimed himself Sun King in his ballet. This story serves as the main thread throughout this performance directed by Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe, who impressed the audience of Vooruit in 2018 with his graduation performance ‘The Ballet’.

In ‘NACHTEN/Ballet de la Nuit’ the night is celebrated in song and dance. Peasants, bandits and mythical monsters recite monologues on a shape-shifting set. This reinterpretation of the legendary piece is a comment on the recent trend of fear gripping society. The roles from the classic ballet are given new symbolic meaning. Meirhaeghe uses ballet, opera and a shift between humour and seriousness as tools to scrutinise the political goals of the famous.

In april, public favorite Meirhaeghe returns to Vooruit with another performance, ‘The Sad Smile, or The Tearing Face: A Revue’.
