Maria Lucia Cruz Correia
Maria Lucia Cruz Correia’s cross-sectoral and hybrid practice speaks to her deep engagement with the ecological crises and climate emergency. Since 2009, her work has reacted to the environmental conflicts of our times, by bringing audiences and communities into participatory laboratories that connect the artistic with the voices of scientists, activists and lawyers in collaborative processes.
Correia’s visual installations, performances and participatory laboratories express a sense of geo-politics, environmental advocacy and kinship with the more-than-human-world. Her artistic practice weaves rituals, performance, walking-with, social design, restorative and resilient tools to fabulate “environmental social services”, such as ‘Urban Action Clinic’, ‘Common Dreams School’, ‘Natural Contract lab’ to engage communities with tools from rights of nature, environmental grief, emotional resilience, climate survival and reciprocal care for critical landscapes.
From 2013 to 2019, Correia was an artist in residency at VIERNULVIER, Gent. In 2017, she received the Roel Verniers Prijs at the Theaterfestival for her first theatre piece ‘Voice of nature: the Trial’. In 2019, her artistic fabulation for environmental justice called voice of nature ‘KINSTITUTE’ was shortlisted for the COAL prize. Her work has been supported by Imagine 2020, Displacement Uncertain Journeys (SW), Be Part (EU), Green Art Lab Alliance (Gala) and TerraBatida (PT).
From 2022-24 she is a trajectory artist in the new environmental organization LEAST (SW) and a firekeeper for the World Ethic Forum from 2022 to 2027.
