Join Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker on a ramblin’ expedition into the blues

In ‘EXIT ABOVE’, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker retraces her steps, so to speak, all the way back to the roots of dance. Her point of departure: ‘my walking is my dancing’ or walking as a primary form of movement – our ‘signature move’ as human beings. Musically, too, De Keersmaeker reaches into the past to dig up the roots of pop music, namely the blues, with its mysterious ‘blue notes’ that occupy a grey zone between minor and major, sadness and joy.

The first destination of the performance is the song ‘Walking Blues’ by legendary American blues artist Robert Johnson. Singer-songwriter Meskerem Mees will adapt a series of ‘walking songs’ together with Jean-Marie Aerts (T.C. Matic) and dancer-guitarist Carlos Garbin

In ‘EXIT ABOVE’, walking meets the blues. For the choreography, De Keersmaeker once again unravels a simple movement to create spatial and physical complexity following geometric lines. The show plays with the tension between marching together and stepping out, between solitary, romantic wanderin’ and the political potential of a group of unarmed people marching in step – the individual and the collective, the line and the circle. In the process, De Keersmaeker traces the footsteps of iconic walkers.
