Dancing her way out of toxic relationships

With ‘RUUPTUUR’, Brussels-based dancer-choreographer Mercedes Dassy investigates toxic relationships. As someone with personal experience in this area, she knows how difficult it is to end such relationships. For Dassy, this topic is connected to wider socio-political systems and their destructive relationships with citizens, the environment and each other. The intersection between the intimate and the political serves as the catalyst for ‘RUUPTUUR’.

Dance is Dassy’s chosen method for turning a dizzying series of thoughts into action. While Dassy danced solo in her performance ‘B4 summer’, in ‘RUUPTUUR’ she performs as part of an explosive quartet. Through the use of prosthetics, four female centaurs tame their fury to pulsating beats. Half trance, half primal scream, ‘RUUPTUUR’ takes the form of an underground night-time ritual. It’s a rallying cry to break what needs to be broken, to revive hope, to act, to accept change, to overcome limiting fears and seek support.

‘RUUPTUUR’ lights the path to autonomy and empowerment: the centaurs ready themselves to face the future by fighting conventions – dancing all the while.
