“What a stunning dance performance!" - De Standaard (****)

'any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones’ is choreographer Jan Martens’ first big-stage production. The title comes from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who uttered these exact words in 2019. This also relates directly to the theme of this show: the right to protest and demonstrate.

A group of dancers spanning several generations – the youngest is 16, the oldest 69 – claim their place on the stage one by one, without stepping on each other’s toes. This is set to a soundtrack full of protest songs from different eras, with pieces from Henryk Górecki all the way up to Kae Tempest.

‘any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones’ was an overwhelming success at the last edition of the Festival d'Avignon. “You rarely see such an inclusive dance ensemble", observed reviewer Filip Tielens.

A must-see for every dance lover!

“Jan Martens’ dancers received a minute-long standing ovation in Avignon. And rightly so: what a stunning dance performance, sometimes intimate, sometimes completely ecstatic"
