Artist Dries Verhoeven creates performance and installation art that focuses on the relationships between viewer, performer, reality and art. He previously built a theatrical haunted house in the middle of the city ('Phobiarama'), organised a baroque funeral ('De Uitvaart') and released 70,000 ants in scale models, as a metaphor for the catastrophe of humankind ('Homo Desperatus'). For his latest work, 'Animale / Rationale', Verhoeven explores the visibility of what drives us.
With the advent of the internet, we have created a space where we can discuss our sexual desires explicitly with unknown others and without censorship. But in the 'civilised' public space we seem to have tamed the animal within. Have we all become prudish? Verhoeven investigates whether this reserve in the analogue world serves to compensate for our digital debauchery.
Please note: it is expressly forbidden to take pictures of the installation.

“In Verhoeven’s installations, happenings and performances, the viewer is implicated in the project in a way that is difficult to predict, and often radically so, although based on an open relationship—namely, that of a voluntary glance.”
